Surprised by Spring

The colors and sounds of May
Came late in my backyard
Unnoticed, unseen, for the weeds.

Look!
Soft green leaves, loud golden petals,
Shy magenta buds clinging on swaying stalks
Sweet orange blossoms on the ground

Listen!
Birds chirping from the apple tree
Behind the fence, a barking dog,
Brown squirrels scurrying for almond nuts.

Stop!
Take small Spring steps.
Taste Today.
Tomorrow will be Summer.

After the Rains
in Three Words

Firm trodden earth
Tired bare trees
Bold emerald hills
Soft-blue mountain
Whimpering cold wind
Grass-infused air
Heavenly opal sky
Eternal warm sunlight
A passerby’s delight
All of these
After the rains.
